Every claim on SnugGym traces back to a documented source. We do not fabricate specifications, invent test results, or present opinion as fact. This page details where our data comes from, how we prioritize and verify sources, and what you should know about the strengths and limitations of each data stream.

Source Hierarchy
We organize our sources into a four-tier hierarchy based on reliability and independence:

When sources conflict, we default to the higher-tier source. When Tier 1 sources conflict with each other — for example, when a manufacturer's website lists different dimensions than its product manual — we note the discrepancy and use the most conservative figure.
Manufacturer Specifications
What We Collect
Manufacturer specifications form the foundation of our product evaluations. We collect:
- Physical dimensions — assembled footprint, folded/storage dimensions, required clearances, weight
- Capacity ratings — weight capacity, resistance range, user height/weight limits
- Materials and construction — frame gauge, coating type, cable ratings, upholstery specifications
- Noise data — manufacturer-published decibel ratings for motorized equipment

How We Verify
Manufacturer claims are cross-referenced across at least two independent sources:
- Official manufacturer website — specification pages and product manuals
- Retailer listings — Amazon, manufacturer-direct stores, major fitness retailers
- Product packaging and labeling — when available through purchase or reader submission
When specifications are unclear, incomplete, or inconsistent across sources, we note the gap rather than guess. "Manufacturer does not publish folded dimensions" is more useful than an estimate.
Healthy Skepticism
We treat manufacturer specifications with appropriate skepticism:
- Weight capacities often assume ideal conditions (static load, evenly distributed, new equipment). Real-world dynamic loading produces different stresses.
- Dimensions sometimes omit handles, protruding knobs, or required clearance space for safe operation. We account for real-world usable space rather than accepting published footprint at face value.
- Decibel ratings are typically measured in ideal acoustic environments and may not reflect the sound transmission characteristics of your specific building.
Our analysis adjusts for these real-world factors where data allows.

How We Weight Reviews
Not all user reviews are equally valuable. We weight reviews by:
- Specificity — "The adjustment pin rusted after 6 months" is more valuable than "Great product, 5 stars"
- Reviewer history — Established community members with detailed post histories carry more weight than one-off reviews
- Time since purchase — A 3-year ownership update provides more predictive data than a first-impression unboxing
- Verification status — Amazon verified purchase badges and forum purchase confirmations increase confidence

Limitations and Transparency
What Our Data Cannot Tell Us
Individual variation. Our data represents aggregate patterns and central tendencies. Your specific experience may differ based on your building construction, usage patterns, maintenance habits, and unit-to-unit manufacturing variation.
Temporal limitations. The fitness equipment market changes continuously. A review reflects the market at the time of analysis. We update on scheduled cycles, but new products, price changes, and specification updates can occur between reviews.
Geographic variation. Building construction standards, noise regulations, and lease terms vary by location. Our apartment-specific recommendations are based on common conditions but may not apply to every building type or jurisdiction.
What We Exclude
We do not use the following sources for factual claims:
- Individual social media posts without verification
- Unverified forum comments from users with no purchase confirmation
- Manufacturer marketing materials (treated as claims requiring independent verification, not evidence)
- Personal blog reviews without specification verification or methodology documentation
- Sponsored content or paid reviews from any source
